The threshold of 55 countries have ratified the Paris Agreement is exceeded. This is a necessary condition that is about to be reached for the success of COP22 to be held in Marrakech from 07 to 18 November.

In its ratification, Morocco brings the number of countries that have adhered to the Paris Agreement to 60; equivalent to 47.62% of global emissions of greenhouse gases. Inorder for the Paris Agreement to enter into force, 55 countries representing at least 55% of global emissions must deposit their instruments of ratification with the United Nations.

As announced yesterday on our site, the Kingdom has deposited its instruments of ratification. On this occasion Salaheddine Mezouar said to the participants that: “His Majesty Mohammed VI entrusted me to deposit the instruments of ratification by Morocco today. Depositing these instruments reflects a firm commitment of Morocco to the Paris Agreement. This is a strong message to the international community that we have crossed the threshold of the 55 countries that have ratified the agreement before the COP22 in C in November. Morocco is strongly committed to the implementation of the Paris Agreement that will make the Marrakech conference a COP of action. ”

On his part, the Secretary General of the UN Ban Ki-moon congratulated the 29 countries that had already ratified and 31 that have deposited their instruments today. “I am pleased to report that we have officially crossed the threshold of 55 countries so that the Paris Agreement can come into force”

However, the 55% threshold required for entry into force of the Paris Agreement is still 8% short. The President of the COP22 said: “The mobilization must continue. I hope after the ceremony this morning that the Paris Agreement enters into force before the COP22 “.

In a speech, US Secretary of State John Kerry said, “I thank the incoming President of COP22 Salaheddine Mezouar for his climate leadership before Marrakech. ” The US, the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases, deposited, along with China, their instruments of ratification before the G20 summitA in China on September 3.
