The two days of informal consultations behind closed doors on 08 and 09 September, between 140 delegates and climate negotiators from more than 50 countries, organized at the invitation of the Moroccan presidency of the 22nd Conference of Parties (COP22 / CMP12) ended Sept. 9 in Skhirat.

These consultations were attended by top level national and international personalities, such as Salaheddine Mezouar, President of COP22 and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Morocco, Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on climate change (UNFCCC), Aziz Mekouar, Ambassador of the COP22 for multilateral negotiations, Hakima El Haite, special Envoy of the COP22 for the mobilization and Moroccan top level champion for climate, as well as Laurence Tubiana, Ambassador of COP21 for climate.

For the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, these sessions and meetings with Minister Mezouar and other members of the COP22 constituted her first official visit to Morocco since her appointment by the Secretary General of United Nations Ban Ki-Moon in May 2016.

The two days of plenary sessions and workshops allowed participants to make progress on a series of key questions for the conference on climate change that will be held in Marrakech, from 7 to 18 November. An important collaborative work was done by the delegates regarding expected results of the COP22 / CMP12, particularly in terms of climate finance and capacity building. Delegates also discussed issues of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, as well as the Agenda of Global Action,The Warsaw Mechanism on loss and damage and facilitative Dialogue and Global Assessment of 2018 (2018 Facilitative Dialogue and Global Stocktake). In addition to the detailed elements of the agenda, the consultations were a valuable opportunity for the President of the COP22, Salaheddine Mezouar to meet the new Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC Patricia Espinosa, share his vision for COP22 with the heads of delegations and exchange with participants on the next Pre-COP scheduled for October 18 and 19 in Morocco.
