Less than 60 days to COP22, Morocco is preparing to participate in an intense diplomatic week in the United States. Indeed, as part of preparations for the COP22, and on the sidelines of the 71st UN General Assembly, the Kingdom will organize many events related to the fight against climate change in New York and Washington.
Thus, from yesterday ( septembre2016 14) in Washington, Morocco participated in the workshop organized by the National Geographic Society around the Paris Agreement and its impact on the oceans. Morocco was represented by its Special Envoy for mobilization Hakima El Haite. This takes place today in the 3rd edition of the Conference “Our Ocean” organized by Secretary of State John Kerry. From 19 to 25 September and in parallel with the 71st UN General Assembly, Morocco will take part in the “Climate Week”, organized by the Climate Group in the New York Times headquarters. Morocco will not only be represented by the President of the COP22 Salaheddine Mezouar, Hakima El Haite, but also by the Ambassador for multilateral negotiation Aziz Mekouar, and the head of the division of civil society Driss El Yazami.
Otherwise, our country will give a speech at the UN General Assembly and participate alongside President Obama on “Leaders Summit on Refugees”. It will also be represented at the Top Level Event for the Acceleration of ratification of the Paris Agreement, supported by the Secretary General of the UN Ban Ki – Moon. On the other hand, Hakima El Haite and Laurence Tubiana ; the two champions of high level for climate, will make a presentation of their work to the UN General Assembly.
Alongside this general meeting, Morocco will host several side events in New York addressing essential topics related to the fight against climate change.Thus on 20th September, the Kingdom will organize at the UN headquarters an event centered around capacity building in the fight against climate change, particularly through the establishment of centers of excellence (of research) on climate change.Capacity building, is one of the major axes of the Paris Agreement and aims at providing the most vulnerable countries with tools and mechanisms to help them cope with climate change.
The following day, Morocco will hold a second meeting with a theme of energy efficiency. On September 22 an event on the Climate Change Adaptation in the Southern countries will be organized. This meeting will include the review of the pioneering initiative launched by Morocco (Africa Agriculture Adaptation) and in a more global approach on the AAI (Africa Adaptation Initiative). This event will be followed on the same day, by a second side event focused on climate finance.
