A year after the organization of the first Mediterranean climate conference in Marseille, it was Tangiers’ turn to host the second edition under the name Med Cop climate on the 18 and 19 July, the event that precedes COP22 and gathers all the Mediterranean countries. The latter had the aim to strengthen the commitment of Mediterranean actors in putting in place a real route map that will enrich the agenda of global solutions
«As Mediterraneans we share socioeconomic and geopolitical challenges but also in terms of our territorial vulnerabity, environmental challenges». It is with this words from Ilyass Omari, regional president of Tangier/Nador/Al-Hoceima that the event began. There were 2000 participants at the event representing towns, enterprises, associations, research centers who had one objective, put in place a road map for environment protection and preservation of the planet for future generations.
«Climate governing of the Mediterranean territory »
This edition had as objective for the represented parties, to reinforce the commitments taken by participating countries at the previous edition in order to reduce the global temperature increase to 3.3°C instead of 2° C as proposed in the COP 21 agreement in Paris. Countries like France, Italy, Spain and Turkey are known for their high rates of greenhouse effect but thanks to EU’s commitment in climate negotiations of European countries along the Mediterranean the emission has decreased. On the other hand the emission from the countries in the southern basin of the Mediterranean such as Morocco, Egypt or Tunisia, has increased rapidly as their economic development. This increase will persist for the next decades as forecasted by CPDN (Planned contributions determined at National level). This is why the signing parties created an organised framework for Mediterranean inter regions dialogue, thinking and sharing, all the good practices allowing the minimization of global change effects which threaten the environment, health and the well-being of the population. Among the nine commitments of the signing parties, figures those of putting in place a Mediterranean transitional plan towards a growth in harmony with the 17 world sustainable development objectives as well as accompanying Mediterranean enterprises to reduce their carbon borrowing and create climate solutions.
